RITES OF SPRING
Paris 1913: a percussive and unconventional orchestration by Stravinsky
The movements of the dancers acted out the torment of spring,
The audience revolted.
Persephone: fair maiden abducted to underworld
eats pomegranate seeds, allowed to return during spring.
Dionysus: god of wine and frenzy
rites that dissolved order, crowds in altered states.
Green Man: face in leaves emerging from stone,
growth where it shouldn’t be, threatens to take over.
Desert Bloom: seeds buried for years
rain falls, the desert erupts a reply.
